ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA (CBS12) — Coco Gauff has taken her training from Palm Beach County to *the land down under*. Ready to pull off what’s surely one of her New Years resolutions, winning her first ever grand slam.
“I felt like I had a good preseason,” says Gauff. “And I hope that this season can kind of show that.”
The 17 year old Delray Beach native is pumped up for the Australian Open, already into ‘the round of 16’ at the Aussie Open warm up tournament the Adelaide Invitational. The tournament has some big names, like Naomi Osaka and Boynton Beach resident Leyla Annie Fernandez. Gauff beat Norway’s Ulrikke Eikeri 6-2, 6-1 on Monday, setting herself up with an early season test in Wednesday, facing Ashleigh Barty. Gauff says she has a vision for herself in 2022.
“Continuing to be a better person, and player on the court, ” explains Gauff. “I would say handling my emotions a little bit better is something that I’ve worked on, and need to work on. Things went pretty well today. Hopefully when there’s more adversity going on in matches I can still keep that (poker face) in the match.”
